Textationship in Dating: 7 Signs He's a Chat, Not a Partner

A textationship in dating is a romance that lives in your phone and never makes it to a table. Here are 7 signs he's a chat, not a partner, and how to get off the thread.

Textationship in Dating: 7 Signs He's a Chat, Not a Partner

TLDR: A textationship in dating is a romance that lives almost entirely in your phone. You talk like a couple. You never sit across from each other. Relationship psychotherapist Dipti Tait calls it a relationship via your phone, with no plans to meet, while you still chat as if you already have a partner. Seven signs: weeks of intimacy with no date, he cancels in person and keeps the thread hot, you know his typing style better than his walk, late-night texts replace daytime plans, he treats the chat like a girlfriend, you feel close and still have no proof, and there is no deadline. Dry texting is low effort. A situationship at least happens in the room. A textationship is a full relationship you cannot photograph.

You have 412 messages. You have zero photos together. He knows your coffee order from a text you sent in March. Ask him what night this week works and the typing bubble dies.

That is the tell. He is dating your notification, not you.

What a Textationship in Dating Actually Is

In a February 2023 Firstpost explainer, relationship psychotherapist Dipti Tait (via Metro.co.uk) defines a textationship as a portmanteau of text message and relationship. It is a relationship via your phone. The nature of it, she says, is that you have no plans to meet up, and you still communicate as intimately as if you were in a relationship.

Hindustan Times, writing in November 2024 for 2025 dating lingo, puts it in street language: the chat is frequent and intense, then meeting in person fizzles. One person gets invested. The texts never turn into a table.

In a May 2023 Psychology Today piece, psychologist Mariana Bockarova, Ph.D., describes people in therapy who have been texting for a long time with hardly any serious conversation, or who only catch up on calls with no plans to meet. She is blunt that a relationship based on texting with little face-to-face contact can be noxious. The notification feels like a hit. Your imagination fills in the blanks. Then the rosy feeling wears off and you still cannot say what you two are.

This sits next to patterns you already know. Dry texting in dating is low-effort replies. A situationship at least occupies the same room. Breadcrumbing throws crumbs. A textationship is denser than crumbs. It can feel like a whole girlfriend experience, as long as you never ask him to leave the house.

App burnout makes the trap easier to miss. A Forbes Health survey published in July 2025 found 78% of dating app users reported burnout. When you are tired, a man who still texts every night can look like effort. Sometimes he is just cheaper than a parking meter.

If his bio already says “see where it goes” next to six group photos and a calendar that never opens, run it through ProfileFlags before you spend three months translating bubbles. Decode Profile Now while you still have other matches.

1. The Chat Is the Relationship

Tait’s picture is simple: you communicate like partners and you have no plan to meet. You have inside jokes. You have a good-night ritual. You do not have a Tuesday.

One slow week happens. Three months of “we’ll hang soon” is a diet.

2. He Cancels the Date and Keeps the Thread

Firstpost notes the usual tell: he comes up with an excuse to skip an in-person meeting and keeps the relationship over text. Work ran late. His roommate is sick. Rain. Then at 11:47 p.m. he is suddenly available for a 40-minute voice note about his childhood dog.

Watch the ratio. How many dates got booked. How many actually happened. If the thread is thriving and the table is empty, you have the data.

3. You Know His Punctuation, Not His Face

Bockarova writes that textationships can feel addictive because you get to fantasize about a mystery person. You know when he uses a period versus a question mark. You do not know if he talks with his hands, if he is late, if he looks at the waiter.

Chemistry on a screen is a draft. Personality shows up in the room. If you cannot describe how he treats a server, you are dating a keyboard.

4. The Best Hours Are After Midnight

Daytime is logistics. Nighttime is intimacy. He cannot do Saturday brunch. He can do 12:19 a.m. “thinking about you.” That split is not romance. It is convenience with a pulse.

This rhymes with soft ghosting in the daylight hours. He is not gone. He is just only present when the rest of his life is asleep.

5. He Uses Girlfriend Energy in a Box

Firstpost, citing Fox 26 Houston, notes textationships can show up as a potential partner, as emotional cheating (intimate texts hidden from a real partner), or even as a married couple who only communicate by text. The through-line is the same: intimacy without the cost of being seen.

If he wants the girlfriend functions (venting, ego, late-night softness) and refuses the girlfriend logistics (time, public, plans), you are the app, not the person.

If you are done auditioning inside a chat window, a page that actually looks like you helps the next person show up in person. MyDatePage is built for that. Create My Page when you want matches who can find you off the swipe pile.

6. You Feel Chosen and You Cannot Prove It

You would defend him to a friend. You have no evidence a friend could see. No photos. No introductions. No “this is my person” in a group chat. Bockarova’s point about checking intentions matters here. Frequent texting can feel like you are on the same page. You are not, until you have said the words out loud and he has shown up.

If naming what you want makes him cool off, the chat was the product.

7. There Is No Clock on Meeting

Bockarova’s practical move is a deadline. She uses a month as an example: an in-person date inside that window. If he will not initiate or make himself available, your expectations are not aligned. That is your exit data.

Open-ended “soon” is how textationships last a year. Put a date on the calendar. If the calendar stays blank, believe it.

What to Do When You See It

Say the ask once, in plain language. “I like talking to you. I want to meet this month. What night works?” Then stop filling the silence with more paragraphs.

If he pivots to more texting, you have the answer. Bockarova’s last step if nothing moves: reduce the frequency of your texts so he has to decide whether to advance or retreat. You do not owe a novel to a man who will not book a table.

Practice the line out loud if you freeze at send. PracticeBae is built for that rehearsal, including the Avoidant Bae personality, before you spend another Friday waiting on a bubble.

The Verdict

A textationship in dating can feel like chemistry because your brain loves a mystery and a ping. It still is not a partner. Partners occupy space. Chats occupy storage.

Give it a clock. Ask for a night. If he stays in the thread, leave the thread.
